Why Mindfulness

Evidence of Benefits

The very practical purpose of mindfulness and mindfulness meditation is to help you focus your attention and be aware of the present moment, not just while you meditate but as you face challenges throughout the day. Mindfulness is at once pretty simple yet complex to explain.

In this 2 minute You Tube Video, Jon Kabat Zinn talked about the benefits of mindfulness.  Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., is the author or several best-selling mindfulness books like Full Catastrophe Living and Coming to Our Senses. He is a professor of medicine emeritus and developed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

The body of evidence for the benefits of mindfulness is continually growing. Over two decades of clinical research has shown that it can benefit people suffering from anxiety, recurrent depression, chronic pain, substance abuse and other conditions. Benefits include:

  • Stress reduction
  • Reduced rumination
  • Decreased negative affect (e.g. depression, anxiety)
  • Less emotional reactivity/more effective emotion regulation
  • Increased focus
  • More cognitive flexibility
  • Improved working memory
