Results of the Pilot study of the MBRT program were presented by members of the MBRT project team from FriendlyCare and Ateneo de Manila University - Department of Psychology at the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) Annual Convention on September 25-27, 2025, in Cebu City. This opportunity enabled dissemination of research findings to a broader academic and professional audience. Quantitative and qualitative results from the pilot study were presented in an organized symposium.

Members of the MBRT Project Team from FriendlyCare and Ateneo de Manila University - Department of Psychology attended the 60th Annual Convention of the Psychological Association of the Philippines from September 26-28, 2024 in Baguio City, Philippines to present the progress of the project through an organized symposium titled “Creating a Resilience Training Program to Support Filipino Frontliners.” This symposium provided an opportunity to share insights and findings with the scientific community, including psychologists, researchers, and other mental health professionals. Three papers were presented in the symposium that offer a picture of how the project is developing.

Last September 25, 2023, FriendlyCare Foundation, Inc. went to the central headquarters of Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Bicutan, Taguig City to conduct a Cultivating Awareness workshop to over 25 employees. The intention of the workshop is to teach the participants about how mindfulness can help them become more grounded in their everyday lives. Through facilitating various mindfulness practices and guided meditation, FriendlyCare intends to bring lessons of awareness and presence to the employees of DOST.

Leaders from partner institutions of FriendlyCare who adopt the Mindfulness for Compassion and Wellbeing (MCW) Program share an openness to acquire innovative programs which are more holistic and secular. Most especially when an institution upholds a certain religious denomination, there is an opportunity to present inclusivity – this is where mindfulness may come in. To be able to accommodate students who may not be followers of their religious leanings, they may be able to offer a secular approach as a counterpart to their dominant spiritual belief and practice through the MHW program.

On August 24, the Mindfulness at FriendlyCare team went to visit the Guang Ming College – Tagaytay for the third-year college students’ orientation to the Mindfulness for Compassion and Well-being (MCW) course that they will be taking for the whole duration of the semester. Guang Ming College is one of FriendlyCare’s educational institution partners and has always been supportive of the organization's mental health programs. Influenced by its Buddhist roots, the institution takes pride in their mindful practices that they continue to embed in their students’ day-to-day life. Funded by Fo Guang Shan International Consortium, GMC currently has three campuses residing in Cebu, Manila, and Tagaytay. The GMC Tagaytay campus which was visited by the FriendlyCare team houses 137 scholars, all enrolled in three college programs which are: Performing Arts, Sports Science, and Human Services (formerly named as Buddhist studies).

In 2019, after receiving a grant from the Templeton World Charity Foundation (TWCF), FriendlyCare Foundation, Inc., in collaboration with the Centre for Mindfulness Studies (CMS) in Toronto and the UP Diliman, developed and piloted a mindfulness-based program. Originally named Mindfulness for Compassion and Well- being, the program was designed to enhance prosocial qualities such as empathy, compassion, and altruism, aligning with TWCF’s goals of promoting character development and fostering emotional resilience among young people. The program was initially targeted at college-aged participants from UP Diliman and the University of the Cordilleras, aiming to integrate mindfulness- based practices into students’ daily lives. The course was later aptly renamed “Mindfulness for Health and Well- Being” when it was offered as a PE elective for university students.

In collaboration with the local government of Valenzuela City, FriendlyCare Foundation, Inc., together with the Centre for Mindfulness Studies in Toronto, Canada, and psychologists from the Ateneo de Manila University, developed and tested a mindfulness-based intervention to promote the resilience and well-being of the city’s frontline workers. With the help of DOST-PCHRD as the funding agency, the project officially started last October 2023.

On December 5, 2026, the FriendlyCare Foundation, Inc. (FCFI) MBRT Project Team went to Valenzuela City with partners from the Ateneo de Manila University Department of Psychology and the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) to present the Mindfulness-Based Resilience Training (MBRT) project to Mayor Weslie Gatchalian and his constituents.

This Suicide Prevention Month, Mindfulness at FriendlyCare tackles the current mental health situation in the country and how it affects the Filipino people, especially the youth. In discussing the problems and the steps being taken by the government, FriendlyCare finds a way to fill in the existing gaps in this sector. With our mindfulness-based programs, we are hopeful that the gaps in the mental health sector will slowly be addressed.
